Acupuncture Care by Donation And Charitable Giving
On Saturday March 7th of 2009, we opened our doors for an event we called Healthcare by Donation. The intention was to offer acupuncture treatments to our patients who were having difficult times affording their acupuncture that month. We offered this donation day with the promise that our treatments would be made available for an honorarium of whatever the patient could afford to pay. In turn, we would take 20% of the monies we collected and give them to local charities, groups etc. The remainder would help subsidize care for patients who couldn't afford it.
From the seed of what was to be a one-time event has bloomed a multiple year phenomenon that continues to grow as more people continue to seek out the benefits of Oriental Medicine. We currently offer Healthcare by Donation on the second Saturday of the month from 9am-1pm on a "first come, first served" basis. We welcome all new and current patients who wish to receive an acupuncture treatment on donation day with no usual set costs. In order to keep our costs down, we ask that patients pay with cash or check into our "Donation" box at the front desk.
The next 2015 donation days will be held on: Saturday October 3rd, November 7th, and December 5th from 9am-1pm.
In addition to our Healthcare by Donation program, in association with Acupuncture Without Borders Switzerland and the Dorje Association from the People's Republic of China, Mountain Spirit Acupuncture is committed to the development of disadvantaged peoples in the field of healthcare, by bringing them training and practice in acupuncture.
Dorje Association is a non-political, non-religious, non-profit organization committed to improving the quality of medical care in China's poorest areas by:
- supporting the creation of charitable clinics and hospitals,
- training doctors, nurses and midwives, and
- improving healthcare at orphanages.
Begun in 2005 as a volunteer project to open a hospital in far west Sichuan Province, Dorje's has since grown considerably. In 2007, Dorje incorporated in France and established offices in Beijing and Shanghai. Still largely a group of volunteers, the members of Dorje draw inspiration from the words of one of our leaders who said: "Life gave me a chance to help others. I'm just doing what I can to make a difference."
Mountain Spirit Acupuncture also is currently on the wait list to travel to Haiti with Acupuncturists Without Borders to give free treatments to those affected by the earthquakes.
